The Negroni

The negroni

An Acceptable Theory

The Negroni origins are easily traceable according to Lucca Picchi, who wrote the book Sulle Tracce del Conte: La Vera Storia del Cocktail Negroni. Though there is no actual proof to the origins but the theory is widely accepted.

Count Camillo Negroni travelled as a rodeo clown in the American Wild West picking up a taste for strong liquor. The Count had also lived in London for a period where he garnered the taste for gin.

In 1919 when the Count had come home to Italy he asked his friend, Forsco Scarselli to make his favourite cocktail, the Americano stronger. Scarselli, a bartender at Caffe Casoni in Florence replaced the soda water with gin like the Count asked. They also changed the garnish from lemon to orange.

The Negroni family realised the popularity of the cocktail by and founded the Negroni Distillery in 1919, in Treviso, Italy.
